Ever had that experience where you suddenly see something familiar through new eyes?
I had just been to chatting to the lovely Kay outside her house in Pridham Street. Her verandah always looks lovely. In fact I make a point of walking past her place when I go up to Racecourse Road just to see all her amazing hanging baskets. I had mentioned how I had the idea for the Festival. She was so enthusiastic. And she mentioned her neighbours across the road, and how the huge rambling rose was spectacular in Spring. Looking at it, I could imagine how wonderful it would look.
Then she mentioned the little garden that another neighbour had been nurturing in the traffic island a little further down Parsons St, and the community garden across the road. It struck me, just in this one stretch of a few hundred metres, there was already so much to see.
We already have a wealth of gardening magic in Kensington. We just need to organise ourselves and turn it into a festival. I really believe that our community can do this. We have the assets, both soil-based and human-based. We can connect them, nurture them and create something that is both a wonderful event and a long-term investment in strengthening our green and vibrant community.
